I gm'ed a game of the new skirmish game 'Across the Dead Earth' last night. Unfortunately I lack the sort of ruined urban sprawl terrain which would suit the game.
As a backer of the recent Kickstarter, whilst I now have three cool gangs of post-apocalypse fighters, but they lack even an undercoat at this stage.
The solution was the work of genius: Star Trek away teams fighting over a stranded federation science vessel, taking advantage of my other kickstarter investment: Battle Systems sci-fi terrain.
Adapting the Dead Earth rules to space was easy - rifles : disruptor rifles, pistols : phasers or disruptor pistols etc.
Player one controlled a team of angry Klingons, beamed over to a stricken federation vessel to kick ass and take prisoners to try and find out what the federation was doing in Klingon space.
Player two represented the Romulan Tal Shier (?), who was under orders to kill federation crew and self-destruct the federation ship before the Klingons to find out too much or federation rescuers arrive. There is a back story - but our players will work it out as they move through the ongoing campaign.
The struggle raged, with both sides decimated - until a Romulan scout enabled the ship's self-destruct and, inadvertently, the ship's containment protocol. This led to a dash to the hanger bay and a desperate struggle for the shuttle - leaving just one romulan standing.
The rules were great - easy and quick. The cards have players unexpected advantages at crucial moments. Both players concluded they under used 'Watching and Waiting' and 'Hide' orders, as the Klingons rushed into battle and the Romulans chased points. The fantastic battle systems terrain was easy to set up and very atmospheric - but room sizes meant that shooting tended to be short range and hand to hand combat a bit too powerful. A great start to our campaign Nonetheless..
